Shoshana - An Israeli Legend
Shoshana Damari (1923-2006), whose songs, voice and performances became cornerstones of Israeli culture, is revealed in the exhibition through the fascinating and exceptional layers of her life. Shoshana the star and diva stands alongside Shoshana the private person, the woman and mother.
The exhibition tells Damari’s story as it emerges from the estate donated by her heirs to the Rishon LeZion Museum, offering a rich and moving view of her world and life. From the thousands of items in the estate emerges the fascinating, multifaceted figure who accompanied us for 70 years: memories from the world of music, fashion items, photographs and publications, including Shoshana’s dresses and jewelry, her first records, the awards she received, rare documents and photographs, and film clips from her rich career.
Accompanied by her songs, the exhibition leads visitors along the paths of Damari’s life. From the girl born in Yemen and raised in Rishon LeZion, through the beginning of her career at Studio Shulamit, her first solo performances and the Li-La-Lo Theater, her peak performances in Israel and her representation of the young country around the world, to her final appearances. An extraordinary singer whose voice, talent and captivating stage presence combined the traditions of her home with collaborations with leading artists. Her musical work, sense of mission and connection to people and country earned her the title Queen of Hebrew Song.
The exhibition also gives space to Damari’s home and family life as a wife and mother, her relationship with her audience, her collaborations with artists and singers, and her image in art, design and humor.
The milestones of Damari’s life and her achievements show that she was a pioneering woman ahead of her time. She won the audience’s affection, respect and esteem, and received many awards. Her radiant personality, the repertoire she chose and her deep, intensely emotional singing wove her songs into the Israeli soundtrack. Despite the years that have passed, her voice has not fallen silent and her magic has not faded.
